"Did Jesus Just Happen" (The Life of Christ)
Continuation of the Second Coming of Christ: With the words, "I will Come Again". the Lord Jesus comforted the disciples on the eve of His departure for the Cross. He had announced to them His coming betrayal and death, and they were exceedingly sad, for all their hopes had been centered upon Jesus's personal reign over Israel the Kingdom, which they believed would soon be set up. And now comes the announcement that their Lord is to leave them. With the promising words that He would come again, it became the one bright spot in the dark night of their disappointment, and it was the Blessed Hope of the return of their Lord which became the incentive of their whole life and made every sacrifice and trial seem trivial.
I want to interject this thought, This Blessed Hope of the "Coming Again" of Jesus Christ has ever been the greatest and most potent incentive of the true Church of Jesus Christ. In the days when this hope burned bright the church was ion fire. When this hope burned low the church sank into apathy and indifference and fell prey to the worldliness and the evil of the day. And what has been true in history of the church is true of the believers as well as the churches today.
The deep heart need of the disciples was met by the promise given them and that need is met for the believers of today. Jesus said, "And If i go and prepare a place for you (I most certainly will}. I will come again and receive you unto myself; that were I am, there ye may be also." The word translated here "prepare" is not the word which means to make or manufacture. It means, as some people would say, to ready up, to furnish or to equip, to make it into a suitable habitation for the one who is to be moved into this place. The Lord Jesus is pictured, not as a creating a new dwelling place, but as taking an existing place and preparing, furnishing, and equipping it as a suitable place for those whom He will receive to Himself at His coming.
Next week, I will discuss what I feel the Lord had in mind of an Oriental dwelling when He used this figure to teach the disciples concerning their future abode.
